Six Sessions, and a Change That Kept Unfolding

A senior executive came to coaching for a handful of conversations. A year later, the transformation had reached far beyond work.

The Situation

This leader came to coaching at a point many successful executives will recognise: highly capable, carrying a great deal, and quietly aware that the way they were operating wasn't sustainable. There was no single crisis. There was simply too much noise, and not enough space to hear themselves think.

The Challenge

What they needed wasn't another plan or more advice. They needed a strategic pause: a place to sort through their own thoughts, reconnect with what mattered to them, and regain the confidence to choose a direction.

How We Worked Together

We met for six sessions. As in all my coaching, I asked far more than I told. Together we explored what "meaningful change" actually meant to them. Not what the organisation expected, not what their peers were doing, but what they wanted their work and life to look like.

  • Evoking awareness: noticing the patterns and assumptions shaping their decisions.
  • Challenging perspective: testing the stories they had been telling themselves about what was possible.
  • Co-creating paths: choosing small, concrete commitments they could act on between sessions.

The Outcome

By the end of our engagement they described a genuine shift in mindset, with new clarity about their priorities and how they wanted to lead.

What surprised me came later. About a year on, I saw them share their story on LinkedIn. The transformation had carried far beyond our conversations: mentally, emotionally, professionally, and even physically, with a radical change in their health and wellness. And the biggest changes in their life happened years after our engagement ended.

Coaching doesn't end when the sessions do. Sometimes the most important work is what the leader carries forward on their own.

What This Taught Me

Meaningful change is defined by the client, and it rarely follows a neat timeline. I often compare it to steering a ship: the bigger the vessel and the sharper the turn, the more rounds of the wheel it takes before you see the new course. Six sessions set the heading. The leader did the rest.
